Job Description
Provides and ensures quality interpretation to the deaf or limited
English speaking patients and families as it relates to their
medical care. Proactively supports efforts that ensures delivery of
safe patient care and services and promote a safe environment at
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
Experience
* 2 years of hospital experience
Preferred Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in Interpretation/Translation or a related
field from an accredited institution preferred.
* Minimum of 2 years of experience as an Interpreter in a
healthcare or health related setting. Pediatric experience
preferred.
* Knowledge of medical terminology.
* The ability to understand and verbalize medical terminology in
English and target language.
* Demonstrated proficiency in both English and target language
required.
* Must be able to interpret information at the patient/family's
level of understanding, recognizing non-verbal communication and
cultural patterns, recognizing and using appropriate interventions
regarding health literacy.
* Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office related to Outlook, Word,
Excel, and Access. Must be able to successfully pass the Basic
Windows Skill Assessment at 80% or higher within 30 days of date of
hire.
Education
* Bachelor's degree or 2 years of experience as an Interpreter in a
healthcare or health-related setting
Certification Summary
* Interpreting course certificate (e.g., Bridging the Gap, Georgia
Perimeter College) specific to LEP Interpreters
* Certified member of the Registry for Interpreters for the Deaf,
Inc (RID) via National Interpreter Certification (NIC) or
credentials by the National Association for the Deaf (NAD) or any
other RID recognized certification (specific to ASL
Interpreters)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* Knowledge of medical terminology
* Ability to understand and verbalize medical terminology in
English and target language
* Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and
target language
* Must be able to interpret information at the patient/family's
level of understanding
* Must be able to recognize non-verbal communication and cultural
patterns and recognize and use appropriate interventions regarding
health literacy
* Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Access
* Must be able to successfully pass the Basic Windows Skill
Assessment at 80% or higher within 30 days of employment
* Must be able to pass the medical interpreters skills assessment
administered by a third party such as Language Line University or
another approved medical interpreting certifying body (specific to
LEP Interpreters)
Job Responsibilities
1.Facilitates communication between patient/family and provider by
rendering accurate and complete interpretation of the message.
2.Applies Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics as they pertain
to Limited English and Sign Language Interpreters.
3.Provides limited translation services, effectively writing in
English and target language to effectively render discharge
instructions and information.
4.Supports performance improvement goals by successfully recording
patient/family interacting encounters on a consistent basis.
