Position Information Forsyth County Fleet Services Department is currently looking to fill 2 vacancies in this position. The purpose of this classification is to perform mechanical work associated with routine service, preventive maintenance, and general repair of automobiles, trucks, and mechanical equipment. Job Summary Performs routine service, preventive maintenance, and general repair of vehicles, trucks, light/heavy equipment, or other automotive/mechanical machinery. Performs inspection and assessment of various components of vehicles and equipment to determine functionality; inspects and tests engine components and systems, such as ignition systems, steering systems, electrical systems, suspension systems, hydraulic systems, brake systems, transmission systems, drive train systems, engine cooling systems, fuel and air induction systems, computerized engine controls, charging systems, starting systems, exhaust systems, emission systems, inflatable restraint systems, heating/air conditioning systems, power windows, lighting systems, or horns. Performs routine and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment; pumps fuel into vehicles; checks fluid levels and replaces fluids as needed; drains/replaces oil; changes/replaces filters and batteries; removes/replaces belts, hoses, fuses, bulbs, and other parts; flushes radiators and coolant systems; replaces spark plugs and wires; lubricates mechanical parts and greases equipment; checks air pressure level of tires; patches holes/punctures in tires; repairs/replaces damaged tires; rotates and balances tires; performs tune-ups. Performs general repair, maintenance, and preventive maintenance work; performs brake repairs; removes/replaces front/rear brake pads; adjusts parking brakes; resurfaces drums and rotors; removes/replaces starters, alternators, generators, water pumps, thermostats, radiators, fuel injectors, ball joints, wheel seals, and other components; repacks, removes, or replaces wheel bearings; removes/replaces power steering pumps and power steering cylinders; removes/replaces engines; troubleshoots automatic braking systems and electrical problems. Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with repairing, maintaining, and testing vehicles and equipment, which may include a service truck, forklift, vehicle lift, hydraulic jack, tire machine, battery charger, brake lathe, air compressor, generator, pressure washer, air tools, gauges, meters, diagnostic instruments, or mechanic tools. Tests vehicles, machinery, equipment, and parts for proper operations; conducts test drives. Determines parts needed to conduct repair projects; completes and submits parts requisition forms; maintains records of time and work performed in association with assigned projects. Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep tools/equipment in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, washing/cleaning vehicles and equipment, or cleaning shop/work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment. Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; reports accidents and incidents. Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, work tickets, parts requisitions, service records, mileage records, timesheets, or other documents. Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, parts request forms, work tickets, parts manuals, service manuals, diagrams, reference materials, manuals, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS This classification is designated as a safety sensitive position which is subject to random drug and alcohol testing and any other drug testing methods as stated in policies adopted by Forsyth County concerning drug and alcohol. Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed. Performs other related duties as required. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED; supplemented by vocational/technical training in mechanics, automotive/mechanical maintenance, and equipment/vehicle operation; supplemented by one (1) year previous experience and/or training involving automotive maintenance/repair, mechanical/engine diagnosis, transmission and brake repair, and vehicle operation; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. * Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license. * Operation of heavy equipment requires possession and maintenance of a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s).
