National certification in Emergency Nursing preferred but not
required Must-Have: Experience in Level 1 Trauma and Emergency Room
nursing Familiarity with drips such as Heparin, Insulin, Cardene,
Dopamine, Epinephrine, Fentanyl, Propofol, Levophed Description:
This position requires working in a busy Emergency Department. The
department has 61 plus surge beds. Patient types include Chest
Pain, Strokes, Diabetes, Abdominal Pain, Motor Vehicle Collisions,
Hypertension, Stabbings, and Mental Health issues. Patient ratios
are RN: 1:4 and LPN: 1:4. Techs are available, with 4-6 for the
department per shift. Support within the department includes CNAs
who assist with vital signs, glucose checks, bathing, feeding,
ambulating, turning patients, hourly rounding, and transporting as
needed. There is also a unit secretary on duty, a charge nurse, and
access to phlebotomy services. Respiratory Therapy and Hospitalists
are available 24/7, as well as Intensivists. Central Telemetry
monitoring is located in the ER. Technology includes EMR usage and
various specialized equipment such as vital sign monitors, glucose
stat strips, PCA pain management systems, and portable oxygen
systems. Floating is required within the Emergency Department.
Scheduling includes working 5-6 weekend shifts out of 12 in a
6-week schedule. Each major holiday requires working one shift,
which can include Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. Requests
for time off require manager approval. RN scrub colors are navy.
The unit culture is busy, yet teamwork is emphasized. Requirements
